Report from the President to the Membership January 2012

I have enjoyed my 3rd year as your local president. The past year has been busy with the UTE Triennial Convention, president conferences, ensuring our local has access to union education, fighting for our pension rights and severance pay rights, and contract negotiations looming on the horizon. On top of everything above our local has had to deal with government budget restraints, adjusting to sudden changes to PSTAR, and the advancement of ARNI.

At the UTE Triennial Convention our local was successful in having a resolution passed for membership appreciation funds for all locals. For preconvention I was selected to sit on the National Finance Resolutions Committee and help set the UTE National budget for the next 3 years. At the Convention I was also elected to represent the UTE Pacific Region at the PSAC National Convention in May 2012.

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) has been a focus of mine this past year, and will so for the foreseeable future with refit changes happening in our office spaces. I will continue to represent the membership on changes needed to improve building safety and comfort. Participating in change speaks volumes to making a difference in OHS.

Formal training remains a focus as a local. As courses, seminars, and conferences are offered through PSAC and UTE we will continue to offer the general membership the opportunity to participate in union training. During the past year we have managed to garner more educational support from PSAC in Northern BC.

I thank all of you who have worked hard to contribute to the local. Whether you are a steward, a contributing member to a committee, or an executive of the local, all of you showed a how important the union is to you and a safe equitable workplace. Notably, the interest the membership has taken in the fight for our pension rights, a fight that we can not let up on and must continue for the foreseeable future. I will continue to stress the importance for our membership to stand up for our pension rights and our severance pay rights.

I really look forward to a new year of contributing to the UTE Local 20002 membership as your UTE representative.

Stand Together, Stand Strong.
