Report from the Vice President to the
membership
I want to thank everyone up front for giving me the opportunity to participate as a member of the executive in the UTE Local 20002.
I have enjoyed being your Vice President this past year. It has been a great learning experience for me. I have come to learn how much hard work and commitment is involved. Whether it is participating in local executive meetings, union training, or meeting with you individually to discuss concerns or most of all receiving the positive support as the new person to the executive. It has not been easy at times, but by looking forward, researching my duties, and interacting with other union members I have successfully contributed to the membership.
I came into the position of Vice President with minimal formal union training. I had been a steward for a number of years, the chair and treasurer on the Regional Women’s committee, and treasurer of the Area Council.
I have gone on several formal training courses throughout year to prepare me for my duties as Vice President. During my first year as Vice President I attended several formal union courses:
· Grievance Handling was the first formal training session I took upon assuming duties as Vice President. This course brought a lot of insight into procedures and protocol necessary to file a successful grievance;
· Advanced Local Officers Training session which went to great detail as to what the duties of all executive is in a local and how we need to work as a team;
· Labour Relations course which was held by the employer, Canada Revenue Agency. This course was very enlightening as we were able to see how staffing and other labour issues are viewed by both the employer and the union.
I am really looking forward to a new year of contributing to the UTE Local 20002 membership, and I am eager for further development of my union knowledge to better serve the membership. Thank you again.
