Report from the Treasurer to the membership
Thank You
I want to thank everyone up front for giving me the opportunity to participate in the UTE Local 20002. I believe that your positive support is 9/10th of our success as a local, the other 1/10th is hard work. Thank you for putting the us into the union.
I have enjoyed being your local treasurer the past year. It has been a great learning experience for me keeping the records, participating in local executive meetings, participating in union training, and most of all receiving the positive support as the new person to the executive. It has not been easy at times, but by looking forward, researching my duties, and interacting with other union members I have successfully contributed to the membership.
I am very pleased to see an increase of the membership interest and participation in the local. Many of you have worked hard to contribute the local. Whether you were a steward, a contributing member, or an executive of the local, all of you showed a willingness to participate in the local. I apologize to those who have shown an eagerness to help with the treasury work, but who did not get to, as there was only so much work available.
As you can see from the Income Statement and Proposed Budget we have a sizable increase in our net income for the fiscal period ending October 31, 2008. The increase in net income was a result of our hard work in keeping our expenses down, the successful sale of many cookbooks, and the executive finding ways of stretching the income received from UTE National for travel. I worked with the executive on formulating a new budget for the 2009 fiscal that we believe is realistically balanced and fiscally responsible. We accounted for income conservatively, and expenses based on previous years probabilities. With this budget we are counting on another successful year to our bottom line. The audited financial statements will be presented at the AGM for your consideration.
Training
I came into the position of treasurer with no formal union training. Therefore, started by researching guides such as the “PSAC Local Officer’s Handbook”, the UTE National website, and studying external course material on accounting for not for profit organizations. I also referenced the CICA handbook for guidance. In addition to this I took union related courses, and I consulted with other members of UTE on particular issues.
The first formal training I took was on interpreting our
collective agreement. I found the course enlightening, and a great place to
start my education process. I then attended 3 formal courses presented
Since then I have taken phase one of the Union Management Initiative (UMI) training, a great session on working together to resolve workplace disputes with respect, cooperation and integrity. I stand strongly by the UMI principles and believe it will greatly benefit the UTE membership. I have also been trained as a UTE facilitator for the Harassment Sessions, and I have co-facilitated a session and look forward to co-facilitating more.
Looking Forward
I am really looking forward to a new year of contributing to the UTE Local 20002 membership, and I am eager for further development of my union knowledge to better serve the membership. Thank you again.
